KCB Need One Win to Retain National Sevens Circuit Crown at Christie 7s

Kenya's domestic rugby sevens circuit reaches its dramatic conclusion this weekend at RFUEA grounds in Nairobi, and for the second straight year, KCB are in the driver's seat. The Bankers need only one victory in their Christie 7s pool — against Uganda Buffaloes in their opening match — to mathematically secure the circuit title regardless of other results.

But KCB coach Brian Wandera is refusing to let complacency creep in. "In sevens rugby, you can be one injury or one bad half away from elimination. We are treating every match like a final," Wandera told journalists at Thursday's pre-tournament media day at Ngong Road.

The Christie 7s pool draws, released this week, have given KCB a manageable opener in Uganda Buffaloes before potentially trickier quarter-final matchups. Kabras Sugar — the Kakamega-based club that has been KCB's closest rival all season — are in the opposite half of the draw, which means a final would be the earliest the two sides meet.

Kenya Harlequins, who have punched above their weight throughout the season, are in the same pool as Kabras and face the unenviable prospect of needing to beat the western Kenya giants to keep their title hopes alive. Quins captain Tony Omondi said his team is "playing with nothing to lose" — a mindset that has historically made them dangerous.

The Christie 7s will also serve as an informal Kenya Sevens national team selection event, with World Rugby Series preparation already beginning. Kenya's national sevens side, which had a strong 2025 series including a Cup quarter-final in Singapore, will be watched closely by new national coach Pepito Ferrero, who was appointed in July.
