Nobody planned a viral moment. Eliud Kipchoge came because he was in Nairobi for a training camp review and Dennis Ombachi invited him for lunch. Dennis, who has built one of Kenya's most-watched food content channels since retiring from rugby, thought it would make a gentle video. He did not anticipate 14 million views in 72 hours.
The video — 11 minutes and 43 seconds of two Olympians cooking, laughing and talking about their lives in the unhurried way that men in their 40s sometimes allow themselves — hit something universal. Kipchoge, usually reserved in formal settings, is unexpectedly funny in a domestic kitchen. He cannot chop an onion efficiently. He has strong opinions about how much coriander is too much coriander. He has been making ugali for himself at training camps for 30 years and he makes it in a way that Ombachi, who is a genuinely skilled cook, finds both baffling and charming.
The ten-year reunion framing — both men were at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Kipchoge winning marathon gold, Ombachi playing for Shujaa — gives the video an emotional anchor that a purely cooking-focused clip would lack. They talk about what the Rio experience meant to each of them, about what the intervening decade has taught them, about where Kenya's sports culture is heading.
"Athletics and rugby are very different communities in Kenya," Kipchoge says at one point, laughing. "We don't see each other much. But we are the same. We understand each other. Because we have both stood on that line and decided to give everything." The clip from that exchange alone has been used in 40,000 separate social media posts across X, Instagram and TikTok.
Kenyan Tourism Board has already reached out to Ombachi about a tourism campaign collab, and international food and sports brands are reportedly in conversation with both men's management teams. A 14-million-view video in 72 hours, in any language, is commercial inventory. This one happens to also be genuinely lovely.
