EPRA Retains Fuel Prices for September–October Cycle Despite Rising Import Costs

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority has retained the maximum retail prices of Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene for the pricing cycle running from September 15 to October 14, offering motorists a second straight month without an increase at the pump.

In Nairobi, a litre of Super Petrol will continue retailing at Ksh214.03, Diesel at Ksh217.86 and Kerosene at Ksh191.38. Mombasa motorists will pay Ksh210.87 for petrol, Ksh214.58 for diesel and Ksh188.09 for kerosene, while Nakuru, Eldoret and Kisumu retain their own slightly higher inland prices reflecting transport costs from the coast.

EPRA said the decision to hold prices steady came despite mixed movement in international costs: the landed cost of imported Super Petrol fell by nearly 8% between July and August, while the cost of imported Diesel rose by close to 12% over the same period, and Kerosene's landed cost climbed by nearly 10%. The regulator said the changes were absorbed within its pricing formula without needing to adjust the pump price consumers pay.

The stability comes even as global crude prices have pushed above $100 a barrel in recent weeks, driven by disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz linked to the wider Middle East conflict. Analysts have cautioned that further escalation could eventually filter through to Kenyan pump prices in future review cycles, even if this month's numbers offered a reprieve for households and transporters.
